February 1st from 4pm-5:30pm at the Old Forge Library
LivingADK is excited to announce we will be co-host the Local Food LAUGHs event through our "Old Forge Farmers Market" brand.  This event is in conjunction with the Old Forge Library, Weaving Home, Niccoll's Nurses and Exeter Park Farms.  This event will be at the Old Forge Library on February 1st from 4:00 pm-5:30 pm.  Featured is an interactive chopping class where participants will learn to prepare local root vegetables, as well as arts and crafts where participants will learn to grow windowsill onions and build reed crosses in the Irish celebratory tradition.  We will also feature presentations by a local nurse on the nutritional aspects of local root vegetables and a local farmer on where to get local produce this time of year and why supporting local and sustainable food is important.  Free and open to the public. Please wear a mask and be prepared to take some chopped veggies (that YOU prepared) and a recipe home!
Alternative Heat Sources in the Central Adirondacks
Free and Open Zoom Presentation February 7th
Ever wondered about heating sources other than heating oil?  Curious how to reduce your carbon footprint, save on your monthly heating bills and what types of rebates/incentives are out there to convert your home/business heating?   LivingADK along with the Inlet Area Community Task Force are hosting a Zoom presentation featuring City Suburban.  A local installer of mini-splits, geothermal, ground source heat pumps and propane fireplace inserts, Kris of City Suburban will talk a bit about the costs, benefits and opportunities to move away from heating oil.  Heat Smart Mohawk Valley will also talk about current rebates and incentives for upgrading your technology.

Together we can help reduce our local carbon footprint.  This event helps our town to qualify for Climate Smart Communities grants in the future and is part of our "green" initiatives.

It's Happening in Herkimer County Grant

LivingADK is excited to announce the receipt of a $300 microgrant through the "It's Happening in Herkimer County" campaign.  The grant was received in an effort to put a town-centric mural along the wall of Souvenir Village facing Tony Harper's Pizza & Clam Shack.  Plans for the exact mural design will continue to evolve, but the theme will be showcasing what an exciting place the Central Adirondacks are to work, live and play.  The mural will feature themes from the area to showcase civic pride and brightening up the center of town in an impactful way.  The hope is that this mural project helps spin off others in town and in surrounding towns to celebrate the arts in public spaces.

In January, the Mohawk Valley Health System was able to fill an X-ray tech vacancy at the Old Forge office.  Marlene Artessa is now performing X-ray services on Tuesdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Old Forge MVHS office.  She travels from Ilion weekly and came out of retirement to fill this vacancy.Marlene may be able to expand her services during the summer tourism season.  The hire comes as a direct result of the advocacy of the LivingADK Healthcare Committee, which continues to push for health and social service resources in our area to serve the needs of our residential population.Welcome Marlene!  We appreciate having you here.

Survey Corner Reminder: Be Heard! Help the various ongoing efforts in our area by sharing!

1) Housing Condition Survey This newly released survey through Town of Webb is slated to explore the condition of our housing stock in the area.  Could there be grants to fix up dilapidated structures? Grants to modify 3 season camps to year round housing?  Funding from the state and federal government requires data on need, so to access grant funds to pursue these efforts we first need a financial understanding of where our housing stock is as a community and what monies would help preserve/expand that stock

2) New York State Broadband AssessmentNew York State is conducting a survey to determine where internet is lacking in the state, why, as well as assessing speed.   Although you may have taken a similar survey in the past, these were conducted by the town and the county.  New York State is now conducting the most important survey, so be heard and do not be discouraged, take the 2 minute survey so that federal dollars incentivize builds in our area.

3) Co-Housing Survey (Launched December) to determine demand for a new program connecting older homeowners to "host" housemates in exchange for rent in the form of payment/chores in an effort to keep seniors in their home while offering (some) additional affordable housing options
